Beynon was born in London on 23 March 1936. He held house positions, specialising in psychiatry, at Park Hospital Davyhulme, Withington Hospital and Hope and Salford Royal Hospitals Salford. He was registrar in psychiatry for Salford Hospital Group and Booth Hall Hospital before being appointed senior psychiatric registrar for Manchester Regional Hospital Board in 1964. He was later appointed consultant child psychiatrist for the Hull Area.
