Administrative / Biographical History

MB BCh BAO Dublin 1926; FRCSI 1930; FRCS Eng 1932.

After a distinguished academic career, Clarke held house positions at Ancoats Hospital Manchester and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London. He then returned to Manchester as clinical assistant to the Orthopaedic Department of Ancoats Hospital and the same year was appointed visiting surgeon to the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital Oswestry. In 1931 Clarke gained appointments as orthopaedic surgeon to Crumpsall Hospital Manchester and assistant honorary orthopaedic surgeon at the Devonshire Royal Hospital Buxton. Clarke also held positions as assistant orthopaedic surgeon at Biddulph Grange Orthopaedic Hospital and lecturer in surgical pathology (orthopaedics) and clinical tutor in orthopaedics at the University of Manchester. He was a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was knighted in 1969.
