Goodman studied at the University of Manchester and held junior appointments at Ashton-under-Lyne General Hospital and Sale and Brooklands War Memorial Hospital before being appointed medical officer to the British Pregnancy Advisory Service. Goodman was later appointed consultant psychosexual therapist for Salford Area Health Authority and was also consultant at Manchester BUPA Hospital. Goodman was also honorary teacher in clinical medicine at the University of Manchester. Goodman was a member of the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine. He was consultant editor for the British Journal of Sexual Medicine and published a number of works on the nature of sexuality.
