Appleton was house surgeon at MRI until 1929 when he was appointed assistant MOH and tuberculosis medical officer for Hankow, China, holding these posts until 1937. Returning to England he became deputy VD officer for Salford and in 1939 was appointed assistant county senior medical officer for Nottinghamshire. In 1941 he was MOH for Newton-le-Willows and Golborne, and in 1946 became MOH for Stalybridge. In 1947 Appleton was appointed divisional medical officer to the Goole districts, a position he served in for 23 years. He died on 29 July 1978.
