Known as Margaret, Francis was a medical student at the University of Manchester. While studying medicine Francis became an international athletics champion, winning many running and hurdles races. She gave up her chance to appear in the 1956 Olympic Games to concentrate on her medical studies. Francis met her future husband Dr Terence Carman Davies while studying at Manchester. After qualifying, Francis was senior house physician at Booth Hall Children's Hospital, Manchester.
