Gallaher began his working life in 1913 as a bank clerk. After the war he studied medicine at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1929. Gallaher began to practise at Castleton in 1930 but his practise was not successful and in May 1934 he was bankrupt. Gallaher later moved to Wallasey, Cheshire.
