Barrie trained at Manchester and was assistant resident surgical officer at Ancoats Hospital, Manchester. He then worked as orthopaedic registrar at United Liverpool Hospitals and as senior orthopaedic registrar at Leeds before being appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Preston and Chorley Hospital Group, where he ran a widely acclaimed unit. Case was a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and a member of Manchester Medical Society . Case died on 3 August 1998.
