Administrative / Biographical History

MA Edin 1872, MB CM 1876.

Grant was born in Fifeshire in 1854. After graduating in medicine, he was resident medical officer at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and then Edinburgh Children's Hospital. In 1878 Grant was appointed resident medical officer at the Royal National Hospital for Consumption on the Isle of Wight. He did postgraduate work in Vienna and then in the early 1880s became resident medical officer at Barnes Convalescent Hospital, Cheadle. In 1883 he was appointed resident medical officer at MRI amid some controversy. Around this time, Grant's health broke down and he went to Australia as medical officer in the Lunacy Department of New South Wales. He was later appointed lecturer in materia medica at the University of Melbourne and honorary out-patient physician at Melbourne Hospital. Grant was physician to St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne where he helped to lay the foundations of a great medical school. He died on 27 April 1931.
