Administrative / Biographical History

MD and S Berlin 1836; MRCS Eng 1837; FRCP Edin 1839.

Only son of James Ainsworth, born in 1811, educated at Manchester Grammar School. In 1828 Ainsworth became a student at the MRI, proceeding to London to study medicine. Took degree of MD at Berlin and travelled extensively in Europe. He returned to Manchester and commenced practice in his father's house until 1839.

Ainsworth joined Manchester Royal School of Medicine in 1838 as lecturer in pathology and morbid anatomy. In 1841 he was appointed physician to the MRI. Ainsworth held positions as consulting physician at Manchester Union Workhouse, Salford and Pendleton Royal Hospital, the Lunatic Hospital Cheadle and the Lunatic Asylum, Blackley.

Ainsworh was a Fellow of Royal Medical Chirurgical Society, and until 1853 a member of Manchester Medical Society . He was a renowned orchid grower and cultivated a variety named after him. He died in Manchester on 6 March 1890.
