English studied in Glasgow, Berlin, Paris and Dublin. He held junior positions at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow and at Berrington War Hospital Dispensary before being appointed honorary surgeon to the Manchester Jewish Hospital. English was later appointed surgeon to the Victoria Hospital, Blackpool. He was a member of Manchester Medical and Clinical Societies.
