Goodman, brother of George Goodman, was born on 5 June 1809. He went to Manchester Grammar School and later began his medical education at MRI attending lectures at the Manchester School of Anatomy. Goodman established himself in general practice in Manchester where he was very successful, particularly in the treatment of cholera. However, due to failing health he left Manchester and went to Southport where in 1859 he founded the Hygienic and Hydropathic Hospital at Southport. Goodman published a number of works on nervous disease and electricity after they were read to the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society.
