Administrative / Biographical History

Goodfellow was born in Hyde on 16 September 1865 and received his medical education at Owens College Manchester where he acted as a student assistant in the anatomy department. After qualifying, Goodfellow was house physician at MRI and house surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, before returning to MRI in 1892 as resident medical officer. Goodfellow then went into general practice in West Didsbury and became one of the best-known general practitioners in Lancashire. Goodfellow was active in many local medical societies, he was president of both the Manchester Pathological Society and Manchester Medical Society and was chairman of South Manchester Division of BMA. Goodfellow was involved in a number of important committees, including the Manchester Committee which administered the National Insurance Act, the Manchester Medical War Committee and the Medical Consultative Council established by Lloyd George in 1919. In 1933, Goodfellow was lecturer at the University of Manchester and gave a series of lectures on medical ethics. He was awarded the CBE in recognition of his public services in 1920. Goodfellow died on 24 October 1937.
