Before 'Bill' Acheson came to Manchester he was house surgeon at General Hospital Birmingham. He was senior lecturer at the Department of General Practice at the University of Manchester and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Acheson was a Fellow of Manchester Medical Society and was president of the Section of General Practice from 1981-1982. Acheson's son, David William Kennedy Acheson, b 1955, (MB BS Lond 1980) also practised medicine in Manchester.
