Cathels studied at the Medical College for Women in Edinburgh. She was out-door surgeon for Leith Hospital, clinical assistant to Birmingham City Asylum and resident assistant medical officer to South Manchester Hospitals in West Didsbury. She was later appointed medical inspector of school children in Dumbarton.
