After qualifying, Fletcher held junior positions at St James' Hospital Leeds. In 1949 he was appointed assistant radiological officer at MRI, becoming radiological officer in 1950. He was later appointed senior registrar in the department of diagnostic radiology at Christie Hospital Manchester before becoming consultant radiologist for South West Cumbria Health District. Fletcher was a member of Manchester Medical Society and British Institute of Radiology.
