Bain trained at Edinburgh, Owens College and St Thomas's. Bain was senior RMO at St Mary's Hospital Manchester before starting in general practice in Heaton Moor. After gaining his MD at Durham, Bain went to Harrogate where he built up a busy spa practice and was a notable spa physician. In 1930 he retired to Cambridge where he continued his research work. Bain died on 24 June 1936.
