Cogan was born in Chard, Somerset in 1545. After taking his MB at Oxford in 1574, Cogan came to Manchester Grammar School as High Master. Cogan also had an extensive medical practice while in Manchester. He had resigned from the school by 1602 and died in 1607. Cogan wrote The Haven of Health (first published in 1584). This book was the first Lancashire medical book and one of the first English books on personal hygiene.
