Field went to the University of Manchester, where she trained as a teacher of the deaf and took a BSc in anatomy and physiology. During the second world war, Field left teaching and gained medical qualifications in 1945. Field held various hospital appointments and worked at Holloway Prison before being appointed medical officer to Strangeways Prison, where she was the first woman medical officer to work in a men's prison. Field died on 26 April 1971.
