Ferguson, the son of a Doctor G Ferguson of Oldham, studied at Manchester. He held junior positions at Southport Infirmary and Victoria Hospital Blackpool before working in general practice in Blackpool. Ferguson's first wife, Audrey Margaret Ferguson, was also a doctor. She died on 25 July 1937 after a car accident.
