Goldberg studied medicine at University College London and held junior positions at Weymouth and District Hospital, University College Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Base Hospital and Hendon Emergency Hospital before being appointed assistant surgeon to Pinder Fields Emergency Hospital in 1942. In 1944 Goldberg came to Manchester as chief surgical assistant at MRI. He served in the RAMC for two years before being appointed consultant surgeon to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, a post he held from 1948 until 1954. In 1948, Goldberg was appointed consultant surgeon to Manchester Victoria Memorial Jewish Hospital, Booth Hall Children's Hospital and Monsall Hospital Manchester. He was also honorary lecturer in paediatric surgery at the University of Manchester. Goldberg was later appointed honorary consultant surgeon to North Manchester General Hospital.
