Case was educated at Stockport Grammar School and the University of Durham. He took his PhD as a Medical Research Council scholar and in 1967 was appointed lecturer in physiology at Newcastle University. He was promoted to senior lecturer in 1975 and to reader in physiology in 1976. His research interests lay in the field of secretory mechanisms. In 1978 Case was appointed Professor in Physiology at the University of Manchester. From 1980 to 1986 Case was head of Physiology, from 1986 until 1990 he was head of Physiological sciences. Case was also dean of the School of Biological Sciences from 1990-1994.
