Grimshaw was born in Accrington on 6 October 1921 and was educated at Accrington Grammar School. Grimshaw served in the RAF from 1941 until 1946 before studying medicine at the University of Manchester. After graduating, Grimshaw held house positions at Hereford and Durham before working in general practice in Bakewell, Derbyshire. He then entered psychiatry and after qualifying was registrar in psychiatry at Billinge Hospital in 1954, being appointed to the same position at MRI in 1955. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society . Grimshaw was later appointed lecturer in psychiatry at Sheffield University where he published on anorexia nervosa. He returned to Lancashire in 1960 when he was appointed consultant psychiatrist to the Bury and Rossendale Hospitals. Grimshaw died on 3 October 1975.
