Goudlen was born in Hazel Grove on 1 April 1913. He was educated at Stockport Grammar School and Manchester Medical School. After qualifying, Goulden held junior positions at St Mary's Hospital Manchester, Broadgreen Hospital Liverpool and Stockport Infirmary. Goulden later held positions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Monyhull Hospital before being appointed consultant psychiatrist to Aycliffe Hospital, Durham. Goulden held the position of consultant psychiatrist at Greaves Hall Hospital, Southport, and Abbeyfields Hospital, Studley. Goulden was a member of the Royal Medico-psychiatric Association.
