Born on 14 April 1921, Gadd was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. Gadd spent two years in active service in the RAMC before holding house positions at Manchester Northern Hospital. In 1948 Gadd was appointed resident obstetrical house surgeon at St Mary's Hospital Manchester, later being promoted to registrar. In 1952 he was appointed senior registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Mill Road Maternity Hospital, Liverpool, later holding the same position at the Liverpool Maternity Hospital and Women's Hospital. In 1959 Gadd was appointed consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to Ashton, Hyde and Glossop Hospital Group. He was appointed to the same position at St Mary's Hospital Manchester in 1967 and was clinical lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Manchester. Gadd was a fellow of the North of England Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society.
