Calvert was born in Blackburn, Lancashire on 7 March 1915. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Blackburn and at Victoria University, Manchester. Calvert specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology, and was especially proficient in the repair of prolapse. Most of Calvert's career was based in Stockport. In 1942 he was appointed obstetrician and gynaecologist at Stepping Hill Hospital, where he became consultant. He was later consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician at Stockport and Buxton Group of Hospitals. Calvert was president of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society in 1974, and was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society .
