Barnes was born in Bedfordshire on 16 March 1937. After studying at London University, Banres became senior biochemist at East Birmingham Hospital. In 1974 she joined the Department of Clinical Research at Christie Hospital as a biochemist, and became Head of Clinical Endocrinology in 1982.
