Gumpert was born in Hesse, Germany, on 16 March 1834. Shortly after qualifying in Germany in 1855, Gumpert settled in Manchester as a general practitioner. Dr Merei and Dr James Whitehead had set up the Clinical Hospital for Diseases of Women and Children in Manchester in 1856. When Merei died in 1858 Gumpert joined Whitehead as honorary consulting physician, a position he held until his death. Gumpert was Engels's doctor and his friend; Engels refers to him in his correspondence with Marx. Gumpert died in Manchester on 20 April 1893, his funeral was attended by Engels.
