Gowenlock was born in Oldham on 4 March 1923. He studied chemistry and later medicine at the University of Manchester and was demonstrator in physiological chemistry there. After receiving his medical qualifications, Gowenlock held junior positions at MRI before being appointed MRC clinical research fellow in 1955. From 1958 Gowenlock was senior lecturer in chemical pathology at the University of Manchester before being appointed reader in 1965 and also honorary consultant pathologist at MRI. Gowenlock was a member of the Association of Clinical Biochemists and a fellow of Manchester Medical Society, being president in 1980. He died in 2001.
