Chaff studied at St Bartholomew's before holding house positions at Royal Berkshire Hospital. He was in general practice in Broughton, Salford, for about thirty years, and was assistant medical officer and public vaccinator for Broughton District. Chaff died on 26 November 1936 aged 60.
