Bew was appointed to the MRI in 1789 as visiting physician, he had been a doctor in Manchester since the 1770s having been apprenticed to Henry Renee in the 1760s [Eighteenth Century Medics]. He became full physician in 1790 before resigning to move to Kendal in 1794. Bew was one of the founders of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, being secretary from 1781-1784 and vice-president in 1785. Bew died in 1813.
