Gleisner was registrar at Crichton Royal Hospital, Dumfries, before working as research assistant for the MRC Society Psychiatry Unit. Gleisner was later appointed lecturer in the department of psychiatry at the University of Manchester before gaining the position of consultant psychiatrist for Tameside Area Health Authority.
