      2 volumes Condition: Good, apart from a few stained folios. Impression: Near-shozuri. Illustrations: A continuous pictorial map in the form of sumizuri woodcuts along the lower half of each page from fol. 3b to 83a, illustrating the route from Edo to Kyōto along the Tōkaidō 東海道. Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, on inner back covers of satsu 上 and 下, and on mikaeshi of satsu 下. Manuscript notes: (1) Transliterations of place names, written in Kaempfer's hand, on many of the small paper strips pasted on illustrations from fol. 5b to 26a. (2) manuscript note on covers of both satsu: figurae et picturae cum descriptione magnae viae mediae per Japoniam. tomus superior (inferior). (3) Examined by Chetqua (on front cover of satsu 上). (4) A Japanese Book of Roads (on paper slip pasted to cover of satsu 上). (5) Old shelfmarks: Pr: Or: 138, 139.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N. p., n.d. No colophon, but mokki at head of text on fol. 3a reads: 貞享元甲子三月中旬改之 (i. e. Jōkyō 1, 1684, date of revision). Description: 1 kan, 2 satsu, in a box. (Satsu 上) ff. 1-57; (satsu 下) ff. 58-89. 161 x 115 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 132 x 97 mm. Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed dakuten and some furigana. 16 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line. Original pale yellow covers, with original printed title slips on left bearing gedai: Dōchū kaibun ezu jō (ge) 道中回文繪圖 上 (下). Title from naidai at head of preface on fol. 1a. Hashiragaki: [no running title] , folio no. only. Edition: The earliest (and perhaps the only) recorded edition of this work. Contents: A detailed guide for travellers on the Tōkaidō highway between Edo and Kyōto, giving information on places of interest along the route.
