Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Daocheng 道誠, Chinese monk, 10th-11th century. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Kyōto ?, Keichō 15 (1610) or earlier-see under Edition below.] No printed kanki, but manuscript shikigo recording purchase of this copy reads as follows: 慶長拾五暦庚戌陸 [=六] 月三日買得之 / 三井北院喜見房 / 探題法印舜雄 (花押). Description: 3 kan, 3 satsu, in a chitsu case. (上) ff. 71; (中) ff. 61; (下) ff. 58. 28.1 x 19.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 22.7 x 15.6 cm. Single-line borders with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules dividing page into 5 columns; each column contains 1 large characters or 2 medium-sized characters or 4 small characters within its width. Kanbun text without kunten or reading marks. 10 lines (medium-sized characters) to page, 20 characters to line. Fawn covers (early Edo period) extending round back of spine and attached with paste to spine (hōhaisō 包背装). Title slips (not original) treated with mica, at upper left; those of maki 中 and 下 remain and are lettered with manuscript gedai: 釋氏要覽巻中 (下). Small strips lettered 舜雄之, also on mica, are pasted on front covers, lower right. Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Yōran 要覽 jō 上 (chū 中, ge 下) + folio no. Edition: Undated movable type edition; judging by the shikigo transcribed above, an edition published in or shortly before Keichō 15, 1610. The style of script, a firm, regular kaisho, is characteristic of Song-style printing, and indicates that this edition was based on a Song or Yuan exemplar. The original Chinese preface by 育材 dated -天禧四載 (1020), and endnote (後序) by 隨 dated 天聖甲子歳 (1024), are both reprinted in the present edition. Contents: A dictionary of names, terms and phrases culled from Buddhist scriptural texts, arranged under 27 subject headings and briefly explained. Compiled by the monk Daocheng c. 1019.
