Seals of ownership: Octagonal British Museum stamp, MVSEVM BRITANNICVM, impressed on back of map. Manuscript notes: Note on paper slip pasted to front cover: A plan of the city of Osacca in Japan. (Not in Kaempfer's hand.) Old shelfmark: Pr: Or: 133.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N. p., n.d. [Genroku 1 元禄元年, 1688 ?] . No kanki, but cyclical date 辰歳 on title slip almost certainly indicates Genroku 1, 1688. Description: 1 sheet (folding map) in a box. 840 x 900 mm. Blockprint. Printing frame 695 x 900 mm. No borders. Text-matter in kanji and hiragana. Original dark blue covers of folded map (181 x 105 mm.), with original printed title slip centrally placed. Gedai: 辰歳 (角書) 増補大坂圖. No naidai. Edition: Apparently the only edition with this title. Preceded by editions of Meireki 3 (1657) and Enpō 6 (1678), both entitled Shinpan Ōsaka no zu 新板大坂之圖, and followed by an edition of Zōho Ōsaka-zu 増補大坂圖 (without tsunogaki) published in Ōsaka by Yorozuya Hikotarō in Genroku 14 (1701). Contents: Detailed street plan of Ōsaka, indicating temples and shrines, yashiki of daimyō, street names changed in Enpō 9 延宝九年 (1681), and distances from other places.
