Scope and Content

Variant title: Jumyōin-shō 壽命院抄 [寿命院抄]. Author/compiler: Hata Sōha 秦宗巴, 1550-1607, physician and bibliophile, gō 号: Ryūan 立安 and Jumyōin 壽命院. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [possibly mid- to late-Keichō period, c. 1605-15] . (See notes under Edition below.) The batsu dated Keichō 6 (1601) signed by Yasokusō Sonen (=Nakanoin Michikatsu 中院通勝) on fol. 53b of maki 下, found in complete copies of this edition, refers to the date of composition of the work, and not to the date of printing. This batsu ends: 慶長第六辛丑孟冬九日 / 也足叟素然. The 3-line batsu preceding this, found also in undated movable type editions of this work, has been cut out of the present copy. Description: 2 kan, 2 satsu, bound in 1 vol. (western style). (上) ff. 96; (下) ff. 53. 26.5 x 19.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 23.2 x 18.2 cm. Double-line borders with fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text without furigana. 12 lines to page, 18-26 characters to line. Renewed grey front cover of maki 上 only, within western style half-leather binding. No title slip. Handwritten gedai in red: 慶長版徒然艸上 (no reference to 壽命院抄). No naidai. Hashiragaki: 徒抄上 (下) + folio no. Edition: An undated edition. Comparison with the kanki reproduced in Kawase Kazumas's Tsurezuregusa Jumyōin-shō [fukkan] indicates that the present edition corresponds to none of the six undated movable type editions (無刊記本第一~六種) described in that work and in Kokatsujiban no kenkyū, pp. 526-7. It may therefore be unique. There is a possibility that it may have been printed in the Keichō period. Contents: The earliest known commentary on Kenkō's celebrated zuihitsu work Tsurezuregusa 徒然草, written in or before Keichō 6, 1601 (date of batsu).
