Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Ishikawa Ryūsen 石川流宣, fl. late-17th century. Imprint: [Edo] , Sagamiya Tahē, Jōkyō 4, 1687. Kango at bottom left-hand corner of map reads: 南膽 (ママ) [ = 瞻] 部州大日本國 / 正統圖ハ行基菩薩 / 分形ト云云其跡追テ / 先圖雖有數多改 / 相違正道書加テ今 / 亦板行者也 / 于時貞享四年 / 丁卯五月上旬 / 改之石川氏流舟 / 本朝圖鑑綱目 / 板本 相模屋太兵衛. Description: 1 folding map, made up of 3 sheets pasted together, in a slip-case. 604 x 1322 mm. Blockprint. Printing frame 585 x 1322 mm. Borders (single-line) at top and bottom edges only. Text-matter chiefly in kanji, but with katakana-majiri in places. Original dark blue covers (204 x 134 mm), with original printed title slip. Gedai: Honchō zukan kōmoku 本朝圖鑑綱目. Identical naidai in kango. Edition: Earliest edition of this map, followed by an edition issued by the same publisher in Genroku 15 (1702). Contents: A general map of Japan, hand-coloured, showing division into provinces, many of which are coloured yellow on the map. Details of provinces and their revenues are given in a panel at upper left. A panel along the lower edge gives distances between places in Japan, and another panel, printed inkoku at lower left, purports to indicate distances of places (e.g. 'Tenjiku' 天竺, Holland, Luzon, Nanking) outside Japan. This was the first map to record the map-maker's name.
