      6 volumes Condition: Fair to good, with some stained and soiled folios. Worm damage, fairly extensive, has been very skilfully repaired by urauchi patching. Impression: Sharp and clear in both text and illustrations, although not shozuri. Illustrations: A total of 6 double-page and 12 single-page sumizuri illustrations by an unknown artist: 1 double-page (mihiraki) and 2 single-page in each maki. Seals of ownership: None.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Genroku soga monogatari 元祿曾我物語 [元禄曾我物語]. Author/compiler: Miyako no Nishiki 都の錦, pseudonym, fl. late-17th century. Imprint: Kyōto, Kawakatsu Gorōemon; Edo, Masuya Gorōemon, Genroku 15, 1702. Kanki on fol. 17b of maki 6 reads: 元禄十五壬午暦孟春大吉辰 / 書林 / 京洛五条通 / 河勝五郎右衛門 / 江戸日本橋南壹町目 / 舛屋五郎右衛門. Description: 6 kan, 6 satsu, in a chitsu case. (Maki 1) ff. 2 (序), 1 (目録), 2-18; (2) ff. 1 (目録), 17; (3) ff. 1 (目録), 2-18; (4) ff. 1 (目録), 2-18; (5) ff. 1 (目録), 2-15; (6) ff. 1 (目録), 2-17. 26.8 x 19 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.9 x 15.5 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. 10 lines to page, 20-23 characters to line. Original buff covers with all title slips missing, hence no gedai. Title from mokurokudai at head of each maki. No other naidai. Hashiragaki: Tōtkaidō katakiuchi 東海道敵討 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: This edition of Genroku 15 (1702) is the only one recorded before the text was reprinted in modern editions. Contents: An ukiyo-zōshi novel based on a real-life incident of the previous year (Genroku 14, 1701), in which two brothers took revenge on their father's assassin. The author, calling himself Miyako no Nishiki, was encouraged to recount this incident in fictional form by the novelist Nishizawa Ippū 西澤一風. Author's preface signed Miyako no Nishiki 都の錦. Batsu written and signed by Saitakuken 西澤軒. The work is most commonly known under its alternative title Genroku soga monogatari 元祿曾我物語.
