Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. 6-7 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line. Original embossed vermilion covers, with title slip on left bearing printed gedai: 新謌仙. No naidai. Title from gedai. Hashiragaki: Shin kasen 新歌仙 + folio no. Printed on good quality tōshi 唐紙 paper. Edition: Not identified. An edition was published in Kanbun 1 (1661) and a 7-satsu set entitled Kasen 歌仙, comprising Ko kasen 古歌仙, Chūko kasen 中古歌仙, Shin kasen 新歌仙, etc., was also published in Kanbun 1 (1661). The present copy may belong to one of these editions. Contents: A new version of the Thirty-six Poets (Sanjurokkasen 三十六歌仙) comprising emperors, court nobles and other poets, beginning with Emperor Go-Toba and ending with Saigyō Hōshi 西行法師. One poem and a portrait of the poet on each page.
