Description: 2 + 20 kan, formerly in 14 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 19-20.1 x 14.2 cm. Double-line borders all round. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical and horizontal lines dividing text from illustrations on each page. Kanbun, with okurigana and kaeriten, and hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. Variable no. of lines to page and characters to line. Original mid-blue front covers of satsu 1 and 8 only, faintly embossed with a stylised chrysanthemum design. Original printed title slips on left (fragmentary in the case of satsu 1), with gedai: 訓蒙圖彙. Title from preface and head of mokuroku. No naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: 訓蒙圖彙 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: Earliest edition of this work. Followed by enlarged editions in Genroku 8, 1695 (頭書増補訓蒙圖彙) and Kansei 1 1789 (増補頭書訓蒙圖彙大成), the latter with illustrations by Shimokōbe Shūsui 下河辺拾水. Contents: A popular illustrated encyclopedia, the first of its kind in Japan, consisting chiefly of illustrations with a minimum of text.
