      1 volume Condition: Very good. A clean copy, with minimal worm damage in maki 1 only. Impression: Fairly sharp and clear, with some signs of block wear. Illustrations: Sumizuri woodcuts on every page depicting natural phenomena and manmade objects, two to each page (4 per folio). Seals of ownership: Large square red seal, 'Takamori shoko' 高森書庫, on first page of each former satsu.

Alternative reading of title: Kunmō zui. Author/compiler: Nakamura Tekisai 中村愓齋, Confucian scholar, 1629-1702. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Yamagataya 山形屋, n.d. (preface dated Kanbun 6 寛文丙午, 1666). Description: 2 + 20 kan, formerly in 14 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 4 (preface 叙), 3 (凡例), 37 (目録上); (2) ff. 44 (目録下); (3) ff. 10 (maki 1); (4) ff. 16; (5) ff. 16; (6) ff. 21; (7) ff. 10; (8) ff. 14; (9) ff. 14; (10) ff. 26; (11) ff. 21; (12) ff. 30; (13) ff. 36; (14) ff. 17; (15) ff. 20; (16) ff. 17; (17) ff. 28; (18) ff. 10; (19) ff. 15; (20) ff. 14; (21) ff. 22; (22) ff. 33. 26.2 x 18.4 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 19-20.1 x 14.2 cm. Double-line borders all round. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical and horizontal lines dividing text from illustrations on each page. Kanbun, with okurigana and kaeriten, and hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. Variable no. of lines to page and characters to line. Original mid-blue front covers of satsu 1 and 8 only, faintly embossed with a stylised chrysanthemum design. Original printed title slips on left (fragmentary in the case of satsu 1), with gedai: 訓蒙圖彙. Title from preface and head of mokuroku. No naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: 訓蒙圖彙 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: Earliest edition of this work. Followed by enlarged editions in Genroku 8, 1695 (頭書増補訓蒙圖彙) and Kansei 1 1789 (増補頭書訓蒙圖彙大成), the latter with illustrations by Shimokōbe Shūsui 下河辺拾水. Contents: A popular illustrated encyclopedia, the first of its kind in Japan, consisting chiefly of illustrations with a minimum of text.
