      2 volumes Condition: Excellent. Every folio of vol. 1 (maki 1-10) has been reinforced, for no apparent reason, by lining with tissue on the outside of each folded leaf (!). Impression: A sharp impression from little-worn type. Seals of ownership: Red oblong seal with rounded ends, Shōshishi 尚志子 on first page of each maki. Manuscript notes: Interlinear and marginal textual notes in red and black. Shikigo in black ink on last folio of maki 1, quoting the name Kigin (i. e. Kitamura Kigin 北村季吟) ends thus: 寛延三庚午年 [=1750] 五月朔 慕回書.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Obscure, but Ōtomo no Yakamochi 大伴家持 was chiefly responsible for compilation. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Keichō / Genna period, c. 1610-20] . No colophon. Description: 20 kan, 10 satsu, rebound in 2 vols. (western style). Vol. 1: 27.2 x 20.2 cm; vol. 2: 27.2 × 19.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 23 x 17.4 cm. Double-line borders round all four sides, with fishtail design on hanshin. Kanji (man'yōgana 万葉仮名) text, with printed kundoku in katakana (composed in a separate column of type from the kanji). These are supplemented in places by manuscript kanji, kundoku and kutōten in red. 8 lines (of kanji) to page, 18 characters to line. Front covers, dull red check pattern, of maki 1 and 11 only, within new half-leather western style binding. Surviving covers, renewed c. mid-Edo period, carry mica-painted title slips with handwritten gedai: Man'yōshū maki dai... 萬葉集巻第・・・ . Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Man'yō maki 萬葉巻 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: The second edition of this work, printed like the first (no. 437 above) with movable type. Contents: The earliest and most celebrated anthology of Japanese poetry, compiled by Ōtomo no Yakamochi and others in the eighth century.
