      1 volume Condition: Fair to good. Brown stains on fore-edge of leaves. Impression: Atozuri. Blocks distinctly worn. Illustrations: Single-page sumizuri illustrations with single-line borders on ff. 2a, 3a, 4b, 5b and 7a. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, faintly impressed, on inner front cover reading (in part) : Marunoya 丸野屋. Manuscript notes: Mode of chanting indicated by red marks and dots throughout the text. Also a few indications in black katakana.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [mid-Kan'ei period, c. 1630-40] . No colophon. Description: 1 kan, 1 satsu. ff. 7. 26.4 x 17.9 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21 x 16 cm. No borders (except around woodcuts). No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with occasional furigana. 10 lines to page, 19 characters to line. Dark blue covers, probably original, with original blockprinted title slip in centre. Gedai: Hamaide 濱出 (in kanji). Naidai in hentaigana: はまいて. Hashiragaki: Hamaide 濱出 + folio no. Modern chitsu case. Edition: Undated seihan edition, closely modelled on a movable type edition of mid-Keichō period). Contents: One of the 36 mai no hon, dating from the Muromachi period, telling of the ritual celebrations inaugurated by Minamoto no Yoritomo when land was drained and a site prepared for building the city of Kamakura. The ceremonies involved a pilgrimage to Enoshima, hence the title Hamaide. This story was later used for one of the 23 otogi-zōshi tales.
