      2 volumes Condition: Poor to fair. Grey stains in upper margins of maki 上; some folios soiled and stained; worm damage in upper margins of maki 下. Impression: Blocks slightly worn, but for the most part a sharp and clear impression. Illustrations: Sumizuri illustrations in three sequences: (1) large woodcuts depicting scenes from Ise monogatari in lower two-thirds of page, 11 in maki 上, 8 in maki 下; (2) small sketches in upper one-third of each page illustrating poems from Hyakunin isshu and each of its poets, up to fol. 61b; (3) smaller woodcuts, also in top third of each page, portraying the Thirty-six Poets on ff. 62-65. Portraits of poets (Waka sanjin 和哥三神) on tobira of maki 上; an ashide-e portrait of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro 柿本人麻呂 on last page of maki 上; portrait of Ariwara no Narihira 在原業平 on tobira of maki 下; and vignettes of the Rokkasen 六歌仙 on fol. 65a of maki 下. Seals of ownership: None.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Namura Shōken 苗村松軒. Imprint: Kyōto, Yoshida Saburōbē, Asami Kichibē, Yamaguchi Mohē, Genroku 10, 1697. Kanki on fol. 65a of maki 下 reads: 元禄十歳五月吉祥日 ／ 洛陽書堂 ／ 吉田三郎兵衛 ／ 淺見吉兵衛 ／ 山口茂兵衛. Description: 2 kan (of 3), 2 satsu, in a box. Incomplete copy: maki 中 missing. (Maki 上) ff. [1] (tobira), 1-19; (maki 下) ff. [1] (tobira), 47-65. 27.2 x 19.1 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 23.7 × 17.4 cm. Single-line borders, with horizontal rules separating text and illustrations in lower two-thirds of each page from those above. Vignettes above, in double-line frames; illustrations below, in single-line decorative frames. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed dakuten, kutōten and some furigana. 13 lines to page, variable number of characters to line. Original pale fawn covers, with vestiges of original printed title slips, centrally placed. Gedai: 伊勢物語大成, followed by 百人一首繪抄 ／ 三十六人歌仙 ／ 六歌仙并ニ評. Naidai at head of maki 上: 伊勢物語よみくせ并ニ百人一首繪抄 ／ 三十六人哥仙. Hashiragaki: Ise いせ + folio no. Edition: The only recorded edition of this work. Contents: Text of Ise monogatari 伊勢物語 with a few interlinear notes in kanbun. Accompanied, at the head of each page, by the poems of Hyakunin isshu 百人一首 and illustrated comments on them, followed by poems and portraits of the Thirty-six Poets (三十六歌仙) and Rokkasen 六歌仙. Preface signed by the compiler, Namura Shōken 苗村松軒.
