      1 volume Condition: Very good, apart from a few stains, mostly in margins. Impression: An early impression, sharp and clear. Illustrations: Single- and double-page sumizuri illustrations, similar to those in printed editions of Ise monogatari, in maki 1, ff. 2b-3a, 6a, 9b, 13a, 15b; in maki 2, ff. 2b-3a, 6b, 9a, 12b, 15b; in maki 3, ff. 2b-3a, 6b, 10a, 13b; in maki 4, ff. 2b-3a, 6a, 8b, 11a and 14b. Artist unknown. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書; small circular red seal, half yōkoku, half-inkoku, Shikitei 式亭 (seal of Shikitei Sanba 式亭三馬); small oblong red seal, Kōbundō 好文堂; small oblong black seal, Saka 佐嘉; and small circular black seal (unidentified). All the above on first page of each satsu. Also a small oblong red seal, 明治五改, followed by 酉, on first page of maki 1-4. Manuscript notes: Note by Shikitei Sanba dated Bunka 1 (1804), recording the acquisition of this book from Okadaya Kashichi, on endpaper following last folio of text: 文化元年夏六月 / 芝神明前三島町岡 / 田屋嘉七の許にて / もとむ / 式亭三馬.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Uncertain, but the preface is signed by Shurakuken 酒樂軒, probably a gō 号 used by the bookseller Nishimura Ichirōemon 西村市郎右衞門. Nishimura was also known as Shōshōshi Mitatsu 嘯松子未達. Imprint: Edo, Nishimura Hanbē, Kyōto, Nagata Chōbē, Jōkyō 3, 1686. Kanki on last page of maki 4 reads: 貞享參歳 / 寅仲春吉辰日 / 洛下錦小路通 永田長兵衛 / 江戸神田新革屋町 / 西村半兵衛 / 彫梓. Description: 4 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Satsu 1) ff. 2 (序), 4 (目録); (satsu 2 maki 1) ff. 16; (3 maki 2) ff. 16; (4 maki 3) ff. 15; (5 maki 4) ff. 16. 221 x 156 mm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 184 x 136 mm. (average). Single-line borders all round. Fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. 10 lines to page (main text), 21-25 lines (commentary), variable no. of characters to line. Dark brown front cover of satsu 1 only, renewed late-Edo period, with manuscript gedai: 好色伊勢物語 壹. Original printed title slips of satsu 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been pasted on to mikaeshi and on to blank sheets inserted at head of maki 1, 2 and 3. They read: 首書俗註 (tsunogaki in a circle) 好色伊勢物語. Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Ise イセ + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: First edition of this work, re-issued in Genroku 7 (1694) in 4 kan under the title Ikuno no sōshi 生野廼草紙. Contents: Ukiyo-zōshi tales and anecdotes of the pleasure quarters in Edo and Kyōto, written as a pastiche on Ise monogatari, imitating its style and form in a late-17th century setting. Explanatory notes are printed in smaller script above the main text, in the manner of Kashiragaki Ise monogatari 頭書伊勢物語 published in the previous year.
