Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Chōzen 澄禪, Shingon monk, d. 1680. Imprint: N.p., Chōzen 澄禪, Kanbun 8, 1668. Original kanki on fol. 51b of maki 下, following batsubun, reads: 于時寛文八戊申秋九月日更應諸徒 / 之所請鏤梓矣 / 悉曇末葉沙門澄禪 (花押). Later okuzuke (c. 1830-60 ?) on final endpaper reads: 皇都書林 / 五條橋通・・・ / 澤田文榮堂 / 菱屋友七郎. Description: 2 kan, formerly in 2 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 上) ff. 37; (maki 下) ff. 51. 26.2 x 18.6 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.2 x 17.4 cm. (average). Single-line borders. Single fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text, interspersed with many siddham characters with their reading indicated in furigana. 14 lines to page, variable no. of characters to line. Dark blue front cover of maki 上 and back cover of maki 下, with printed title slip (both contemporary with reprinting). Gedai: 悉曇愚鈔. Title from naidai and gedai. Hashiragaki: Jō 上 (ge 下) + folio no. only. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The only recorded pre-modern edition. Printed, probably c. Tenpō-Ansei period (1840-60), from the original blocks of Kanbun 8 (1668). Batsubun on fol. 51a of maki 下 is dated Manji 2 万治己亥 (1659). Contents: An introduction to the sounds of Sanskrit and siddham script.
