      1 volume Condition: Good. A clean copy, with minor worm damage chiefly round edges. Impression: Clear and sharp, with little sign of block wear. Illustrations: One double-page sumizuri illustration as frontispiece, depicting the bodhisattva Jizō received by the Buddha, surrounded by attendant Chinese sages and figures from the Buddhist pantheon. Clearly derived from a Chinese model. Seals of ownership: None.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Shinjō 眞常, Buddhist monk of Tokuonji temple. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Nikō, Iyonojō, Murakami Kanbē, Jōkyō 3, 1686. Kanki on fol. 49b of maki 6 reads: 貞享三歳丙寅夷則上浣 / 雒陽書肆 / 得榮堂 二口伊豫掾 / 平樂寺村上勘兵衛 / 仝梓. Description: 6 kan, formerly in 4 satsu, rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 1) ff. 2 (illus.) 5 (序), 4 (序), 4 (序), 4 (序), 39; (2) ff. 20; (3) ff. 29; (4) ff. 26; (5) ff. 25; (6) ff. 49, 2 (跋). 27 x 18 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 19.2 x 15.8 cm. (average). Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with printed okurigana, kaeriten and kutōten. Headnotes printed in frames above upper borders on many pages. 7 lines to page (main text), 14 lines to page (commentary), 17 characters to line. Renewed brick-red front cover of satsu 1 only, embossed with a repeat pattern of circles and ornaments. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai: 地藏菩薩本願經. Title from naidai at beginning and end of each maki. Hashiragaki: Jizō-kyō tekagami 地藏經手鑑 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The only recorded pre-modern edition. It contains 4 prefaces: (1) by a Chinese monk resident in Japan, undated; (2) by Shōan 性侒, 34th patriarch of the Rinzai branch of Zen, dated Jōkyō 3, 1686; (3) by the monk Jigaku 慈岳, also dated Jōkyō 3; (4) by the author, Shinjō, dated Jōkyō 2, 1685. The final batsu is signed by a monk Eiken 英賢. Contents: Text of Jizō bosatsu hongan-gyō, one of the three basic sutras devoted to Jizō 地蔵, the bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha, with an extensive commentary by Shinjō.
