[1] (mokki on verso), 4 (preface 序), 9 (main text 本文). 29.1 x 20 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 25.8 x 17.2 cm. Thick single-line borders above and below text, double-line at inner edge of each folded leaf. Vertical rules between columns of text. Fishtail design on hanshin, filled in with solid black above and below title. Kanbun text without kunten. 8 lines to page, 17 characters to line. Renewed shibubiki front cover only, late-Edo period, with contemporary manuscript gedai written to enclose the satsu containing Kobun kōkyō, Rongo and Chūyō. No title slip. Manuscript gedai reads: 後陽成天皇慶長四年勅版 ／ 古文孝經大學中庸. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Kōkyō 孝經 + folio no. In a modern western style half-leather binding. Edition: Imperial edition (chokuhan 勅版) commissioned by Emperor Go-Yōzei in an edition uniform with the four Confucian classics, Shisho 四書 (i.e. Daigaku 大學, Chūyō 中庸, Rongo 論語 and Mōshi 孟子). A typeface of great beauty and distinction, befitting its association with the Emperor. Contents: The 'old script' text of Xiaojing 孝經, the Classic of Filial Duty. A short work in 22 chapters containing a dialogue between Confucius and his disciple Zengzi 曾子 on the Confucian principle of reverence due from children to parents and subjects to rulers.
