      1 volume Condition: Fair. Many folios split at fore-edge; some of these repaired by urauchi. Minimal worm damage at margins, but some folios are soiled and water-stained. Impression: An early impression, printed from unworn blocks. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Momoi bunko 百井文庫, on first page of mokuroku preceding maki 1, and on first page of maki 9 (former satsu 2); also a square red inkoku seal, Momoi 百井, on last page of each former satsu. Both are seals of Momoi Tamehira 百井爲衡. Square red seal, Nanpo bunko 南畝文庫 (seal of Ōta Nanpo 大田南畝) on first page of mokuroku and of maki 9. On the same pages is a further small square red seal, Nandō 南堂. Manuscript notes: Reading marks in red added throughout text at an early date.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Oze Hoan (or Ose Hoan) 小瀨甫庵, also known as Dōki 道喜, 1564-1640. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [c. Shōhō 正保 period, 1644-48] . No kanki. Batsubun dated Keichō 17 (1612) refers to date of composition of the work. Description: 15 kan, formerly in 2 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. 27.9 x 19.9 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 23.3 x 18 cm. (average). Single-line borders all round. No fishtail design on hanshin. Mostly hiragana-majiri text, with printed kundoku, okurigana and kaeriten for passages in kanbun. 12 lines to page, 20-22 characters to line. Mid-blue front cover of satsu 1 only, old but not original. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai (written by Ōta Nanpo 大田南畝, according to Kawase), reading: 童蒙先習 自一至八 乾. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Dōmō senshū - 童蒙先習 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: An undated edition c. Shōhō period, possibly the only printed edition before that of Keian 3 (1650). Contents: A didactic work explaining Confucian and Taoist teachings for young people.
