Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Daocheng 道誠, Chinese monk, 10th-11th century. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Maekawa Moemonnojō, n.d. [Kan'ei-Kanbun period, c. 1640-70] . Kanki reads: 前川茂右衞門尉 開板. Description: 3 kan, 3 satsu. (Maki 上) ff. 71; (中) ff. 61; (下) ff. 58. 25.9 x 17.7 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.6-22.1 x 15.5 cm. Single-line borders with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Vertical rules dividing page into 5 double columns (small characters). Kanbun text, with printed okurigana and kaeriten, and with reading marks and sidelines added in red ink. 5 lines (large characters) to page, 10 lines (small characters), 20 small characters to line. Original (?) dark blue covers, with renewed hand-lettered title slips bearing gedai: 釋氏要覽上 (中, 下). Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Yōran jō 要覽上 (chū 中, ge 下) + folio no. Edition: This appears to be a reprint, perhaps from the same blocks, of the blockprinted edition dated Kan'ei 寛永癸酉 (1633) published by Nakano Dōhan 中野道伴. The blocks, however, seem to have been acquired by Maekawa Moemonnojō 前川茂右衞門尉, who published the present undated edition under his own name. Previously, a Gozan-ban edition of this work had been published in the Nanbokuchō period (1333-92), based directly on a Song edition. In the present copy the original Song preface and closing note are reprinted. Contents: A dictionary of names, terms and phrases culled from Buddhist scriptural texts, arranged under 27 subject headings and briefly explained. Compiled by the monk Daocheng c. 1019.
