      1 volume Condition: Very good, with only minimal worm damage, neatly repaired. Maki 1, fol. 2 is missing from this copy. Impression: Variable, owing to mixture of type from at least two different fonts. Kawase suggests (Kokatsujiban no kenkyū 古活字版の研究, p. 384) that, despite type characteristic of Kan'ei period, the printing of this work may have been done in Shōhō 正保 period (1644-48). Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Ninjusan shoin ki 仁壽山書院記 (seal of the Ninjusan in Harima province), on first page of each former satsu.

Scope and Content

Alternative reading of title: Kinshiroku shūkai. Author/compiler: Zhu Xi 朱熹 and Lü Zuqian 呂祖謙. Writer of commentary: YE Cai 葉采. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Kan'ei period, 1624-44] . No colophon. Description: 14 kan, formerly in 4 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. Maki 1 preceded by: 進近思錄表 (ff. 2), 近思錄集解序 + 目録 (ff. 2, 3). 31 x 21.5 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 23.4 x 17.8 cm. Double-line borders all round. 'Flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, without kunten or reading marks. 9 lines to page (double for commentary), 18 characters to line. Original covers missing, hence no title slip or gedai. Naidai at head of each maki: Kinshiroku 近思錄. Preface title: Kinshiroku shikkai jo 近思錄集解序. Hashiragaki: Kinshiroku 近思錄 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The only known movable type edition of this work. Following the present kokatsuji-ban, numerous blockprinted (整版) editions of this work were published from Keian 1 慶安元年 (1648) onwards. Contents: Text of Jinsilu 近思錄, with commentary by Ye Cai. Passages selected from the writings and dicta of four philosophers, precursors of Zhu Xi, chosen for their relevance to learning and practical use. Compiled in 1176.
