      1 volume Condition: Few water stains and crude patch inside lower corner of folio 1, otherwise very good. Cropped at upper edge. Impression: Sharp and clear, showing little sign of block wear. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow (his smaller seal), 英國薩道藏書, on first page of maki 上 and 下. Small oblong red seal, Bōsandō 房山堂, on verso of first folio (containing mokuroku and preface 序). Small square red seal, printed inkoku, Tenzan 天山 or Naisan (Uchiyama) 内山, on last page of maki 上 and 下. Manuscript notes: A note written c. 1870 in the same hand as those in Jōkyūki and Meitokuki, briefly describing the subject matter of this work, is pasted on the mikaeshi.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: N.p., Kan'ei 10, 1633. Kanki on last page of maki 下 reads: 寛永十年孟春吉旦. Description: 2 kan, formerly in 2 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 上) ff. 28; (maki 下) ff. 26. 26.6 x 18.7 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.6-23.4 x 16.2-16.7 cm. Double-line borders, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text, with printed furigana and kutōten, and kaeriten (for kanbun passages). 12 lines to page, 22-26 characters to line. Original mid-brown front cover (colour rubbed) of maki 上 only. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai, late-Edo or early Meiji period: 應仁記 上. Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Ōninki jō 應仁記 上 (ge 下) + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The earlier (by two years) of two editions printed from blocks, modelled on a movable type edition datable to Genna / early-Kan'ei period. Another movable type edition, printed within single borders, was published later in Kan'ei period, as well as seihan editions of Kan'ei 12 (1635) and without date. The present edition is uniform with seihan editions of Jōkyūki 承久記 (Or.75.ff.17) and Meitokuki 明德記 (Or.75.ff.19). Contents: A war narrative (gunki or senki monogatari) recounting the 10-year period of strife between the Hosokawa and Yamana daimyō, known as the Ōnin war (Ōnin no ran 応仁の乱), 1467-77, which led into a century of warfare and disunion, the sengoku jidai 戦国時代.
